V-Henny: Your music blends hip-hop, alternative rock, and melodic influences so naturally. When you first started creating music, did you always know you wanted to be genre-less, or did your sound evolve over time?
How would you describe your music to someone hearing it for the first time?
Young Moddy: Honestly it evolved overtime. I started out versatile dabbling into each genre the “right” way until I accidentally started using the elements from all the genres I love. If I were to describe my music to someone for the first time I’d say it’s like collision course by jayz and linkin park.
V-Henny: Philadelphia has a rich musical history across multiple genres. How has growing up in the city influenced your sound, work ethic, and perspective as an artist?
What part of Philly still inspires you today?
Young Moddy: Growing up in Philly gave me the ability to be authentically me. Coming from a very proud city gave me real pride in who I am as a person as well as an artist. West Philly will always inspire since it’s my roots. I grew up not too far from where Will Smith grew up and that’s always been someone who inspired me.
V-Henny: Songs like Love Is a Gun and Since You Been Gone are emotionally transparent. Is songwriting a form of therapy for you?
How difficult is it to be vulnerable while knowing thousands of people may hear your story?
Young Moddy: Songwriting is very therapeutic for me. It wasn’t always easy for me to open up so I picked up the pen to express myself. Whether it was storytelling, poems and songwriting. Writing has always been my passion. It’s actually easy because my music heals. I’ve been told that I voice so much of what the youth/ everyday person goes through. That’s my why.
V-Henny: Your catalog balances heartbreak, ambition, and self-reflection. Which emotion is the easiest for you to write about, and which one challenges you the most?
Do your songs usually come from personal experiences, or do you draw inspiration from the people around you?
Young Moddy: It really depends on the vibe that I’m in. I pull from both personal experiences and the people I’m around. With my imagination the smallest situations can create a song.
V-Henny: As an independent artist, you’ve been steadily building your audience without taking shortcuts. What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned about navigating today’s music industry on your own?
What advice would you give artists who are just starting their journey?
Young Moddy: Biggest lesson I’ve learned is without consistency it won’t happen. There’s no shortcuts it’s one and a million that you drop your first song and blow up. It takes sleepless nights listening to instrumental after instrumental. My advice is to keep going regardless of how it looks you won’t be him/her over night but enjoy the process. Engage with your community and stay true to yourself.
V-Henny: You’ve been featured on aBreak Music playlists several times. How important has that recognition been in helping you reach new listeners?
Was there a moment when you realized people outside your immediate circle were really connecting with your music?
Young Moddy: Being on abreaks playlist was/is very vital to gaining new listeners. I’ve learned that at a certain point some listeners won’t come until they’ve seen some real motion. So being on abreak for multiple months at a time with real American idol stars shows not only me but the people that this isn’t just a hobby. I knew people were really connecting when I’d perform and people would tell me I healed their inner child. Being black and making my type of music is therapy for a lot of people who got shunned or bullied for liking alternative music.
V-Henny: Every artist has a record that holds special meaning. Which song in your catalog means the most to you personally, and why?
Did creating that song change you in any way?
Young Moddy: Choker means the most to me. It was the very first song I made in this style of music. Also I made it at a time I consider one of my lowest points in life. I didn’t have a job and honestly I didn’t know where I was going in life. Lost and confused I made that song and everything changed. It ran for months on abreak and peaked number 5. It showed me I really did have something special.
V-Henny: When you’re creating a new project, what’s more important to you—telling a story, experimenting with sound, or making something people can instantly connect with?
How do you know when a song is truly finished?
Young Moddy: All three components matter to me. Every time I’m creating it’s purposeful. I strive to challenge myself by not sounding the same within my own catalog. Being recognizable is good but I never put myself in a box. Also to me it’s not really a good song if somebody doesn’t walk away with something or feels heard. I know a song is done when I get that chill in my chest after listening to it.
V-Henny: Outside of music, what’s something fans would never expect to learn about Young Moddy?
Whether it’s a hobby, hidden talent, favorite movie, or personal ritual, give us something that might surprise people.
Young Moddy: Honestly most people wouldn’t know that I have a knife and lighter collection. Custom knifes and lighters with my name, favorite colors and designs.
V-Henny: Looking ahead, what do you hope people say about Young Moddy ten years from now?
When your career is all said and done, what legacy do you hope you’ve left behind?
Young Moddy: In ten years I want them to say he’s one of the most versatile artist to live. No genre untouched. I hope that my legacy inspires people to never give up. I want them to see who Young Moddy became and to see where I’ve come from. Regardless of my situation I found a way and made it happen
